Donio Believes In Healthy New Era For The Music Biz In The Years Ahead 7.10.12

Jim Donio, President of music business association NARM and digitalmusic.org, the home of NARM’s digital initiatives, commented on the mid-year sales report issued by Nielsen SoundScan and published by Billboard:

“With the first half of 2012 behind us, the encouraging news is that unit sales volume for all music categories is up by 4%. This does not take into account streaming, subscription and other commercial music services that are continuing to rise in usage and revenue generation. So, you can see it’s really important that we recognize there’s so much more to today’s music commerce story. After ending 2011 in the plus column, there has been a slight shift down about 3% in overall album sales volume, but this is considerably better than the declines we were seeing a few years ago. Digital album sales volume is up by about 14% and track sales volume is approaching +6%, both somewhat off last year’s increasing pace. While it’s troubling that the decline in CD sales has started to pick up speed again to about -12%, we are still off the peak declines in the -18% to 20% range of recent years.  Based on innovation, development and more mainstream adoption of new music commerce models, I think there is every reason to believe we’ll experience a healthy new era for the music business in the years ahead.”
